A year earlier, researchers at RMIT in Melbourne found that replacing 15 per cent of sand in concrete with used ground coffee makes the material 30 per cent stronger. In this case, according to the scientists, it is possible to ‘kill two birds with one coffee bean’, because the production method relies less on sand, which is not a renewable resource, and also reduces the amount of organic waste that is sent to landfill, thereby reducing greenhouse emissions.
